Gillespie spent most of 2011 at Triple-A, batting .300/.405/.479 with 12 homers and 24 steals. He should be back up with the D’Backs at some point this season.

The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Mike Jacobs. Gillespie, 28, spent all of this season at Triple-A Reno, where he batted .308/.390/.494 with 13 homers and 11 steals. It’s possible he could receive some interest on waivers.

Gillespie was designated for assignment last week and opted for free agency after passing through waivers. The 28-year-old outfielder batted .308/.390/.494 with 13 homers and 11 steals this season with Triple-A Reno.

Gillespie had a nice year at Reno, batting .300/.405/.479 with 12 homers and 24 steals over 484 at-bats. He’ll give the D’Backs some outfield depth.

He teed off on Ramon Troncoso. That’s one way to make your case for the postseason roster. With just eight at-bats to his name, however, it’s an honor Gillespie is unlikely to receive. He’ll compete for a bench spot next spring.

The 28-year-old is coming off a strong season at Triple-A Reno where he hit .308/.390/.494 with 13 homers, 66 RBI and 11 stolen bases. The former third round pick possesses a nice blend of power and speed and should compete for a reserve outfield job with the defending champions. He could be worth a look as a late-round flyer in extremely deep fantasy formats.

Jackson will play another game for Reno on Friday. Cole Gillespie figures to be sent down to make room for him on the roster, perhaps as soon as Saturday.

Gillespie has hit .300 with five doubles in 30 at-bats, so he’s made a case for sticking around as the Diamondbacks’ fourth outfielder after Conor Jackson returns. Still, the team probably isn’t ready to send Gerardo Parra down just yet.

Gillespie, 25, managed 39 at-bats in 17 games from the time he was called up -- April 24 -- and hit .256 with a .310 on-base percentage. He’s likely to be recalled if there’s an injury in the Arizona outfield.

He’s cleared waivers after being designated for assignment Wednesday. Gillespie has batted 240/.328/.280 over 59 plate appearances in the majors this season.
