Colt Morton had three homers, a double and a walk Friday for Single-A Lake Elsinore.
The monster game came at offensive paradise High Desert. The homers were Morton’s first in 52 at-bats at two levels this season. The 25-year-old potential backup is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Padres purchased the contract of catcher Colt Morton from Double-A San Antonio.
The Padres lost Pete Laforest on waivers, so they had to look elsewhere for a third catcher. Morton, 25, could turn out to be the team’s long-term backup, but he’ll need to spend next year in Triple-A.
  • Michael Barrett suffered a strained throwing elbow on Monday and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Barrett felt a “pop,” and it’s possible that he damaged the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. If so, Barrett could be facing reconstructive surgery. Colt Morton will be recalled from Double-A San Antonio to back up Josh Bard, likely to preserve Nick Hundley’s service time.

Padres reassigned LHP Wade LeBlanc, RHP Paul Abraham, LHP Arturo Lopez, INF Edgar Gonzalez, INF Marshall McDougall, 2B Matt Antonelli, OF Mike Baxter, OF Will Venable, OF Drew Macias, OF Vince Sinisi, C Nick Hundley and C Jose Lobaton to minor league camp; optioned C Colt Morton and RHP Mauro Zarate to Triple-A Portland; optioned RHP Ernesto Frieri to Double-A San Antonio, optioned RHP Wilton Lopez to Single-A Lake Elsinore.
That’s quite a round of cuts. LeBlanc was a sleeper candidate to become the Padres’ fifth starter, but with both Justin Germano and Wilfredo Ledezma pitching well, there was no reason to rush him. Antonelli went 3-for-20 with a homer this spring. Venable was 6-for-18 with a couple of homers.

Morton was just called up two days ago, but with the return of Michael Barrett he’s no longer needed. Morton didn’t see the field in his short stay with the Padres.

Padres recalled catcher Colt Morton from Double-A San Antonio.
The Padres thought Michael Barrett was still a few days away, so Morton will back up Luke Carlin for now. He’s not an option in NL-only leagues.

Padres optioned catcher Colt Morton to Double-A San Antonio.
Morton went 1-for-15 while spending a month backing up Josh Bard, but the Padres have decided to give Luke Carlin a shot in the little-used role instead.
