The Padres are hiring Craig Stammen as their new manager.
He’s getting a three-year deal. The 41-year-old Stammen pitched for the Padres from 2017-22 before retiring, amassing a 3.36 ERA in 394 1/3 innings along the way. He rejoined the Padres prior to the 2024 season, and he was one of three people with the title of special assistant to the major league staff and baseball operations last season.

Craig Stammen has retired from his playing career.
Stammen and Cole Hamels were both placed on the voluntary retirement list on Friday. Stammen, 39, suffered a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and a strained sub-scaplua back in spring training and indicated at the time that he was unlikely to pitch again. Now he’s officially done. Stammen has had a heck of a run, pitching 13 season between the Nationals and Padres, most it coming as a multi-inning reliever. He had five seasons of 80-plus innings after moving to the bullpen. He’ll walk away with a 3.66 career ERA over 885 innings.
  • Craig Stammen (shoulder) told reporters on Sunday that he’s unlikely to pitch again.
“Without saying that I’m done, it’s highly unlikely that I pitch again,” said Stammen after being diagnosed with a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder and also a strained sub-scapula. If this is truly the end of his career, the 39-year-old righty reliever will finish with a 3.66 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 562 appearances.

  • Padres manager Bob Melvin told reporters Saturday that Craig Stammen’s right shoulder injury isn’t as serious as it appeared.
Stammen made a quick exit from a Cactus League relief appearance on Friday with an apparent right shoulder issue, but it sounds like he’s avoided anything serious. The veteran righty will be shut down for a few days before being reevaluated.

  • Craig Stammen was removed from Friday’s Cactus League contest due to discomfort in his pitching shoulder.
Stammen wound up missing most of the second half of the 2022 season due to shoulder issues, so this is obviously concerning. The Padres announced that he’ll be evaluated further on Saturday. At this point, a stint on the injured list to begin the season seems inevitable.

  • Padres re-signed RHP Craig Stammen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
It felt inevitable that the Padres and Stammen would reunite and he’s officially back for a seventh season in San Diego. The veteran righty reliever, who turns 39 years old in early March, will compete this spring in the Cactus League for a spot on the Padres’ Opening Day roster. He missed the majority of last season due to right shoulder inflammation and posted a respectable 4.43 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 35/10 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings (33 appearances). He’ll earn $1.5 million this season if he’s added to the Padres’ major league roster.

  • Craig Stammen allowed five runs in three innings in a start and loss Wednesday against the Giants.
Stammen started a bullpen day in a game that meant nothing for both clubs. The 38-year-old gave up six hits, and he walked three with three strikeouts. Stammen was mostly a solid option for the Padres in his limited time with the club -- he missed significant time in the second half with shoulder trouble -- but he’s unlikely to be a factor in the postseason, and won’t be worth draft consideration if he comes back for the 2023 season.

  • Padres activated RHP Craig Stammen from the 60-day injured list.
Stammen will make his return to the Padres bullpen after missing much of the second half of the season with right shoulder inflammation. The 38-year-old right-hander brings a 3.34 ERA over 32 1/3 innings of work.

  • Craig Stammen (shoulder) hurled two scoreless innings on Friday in a minor league rehab appearance for Triple-A El Paso.
Stammen scattered a pair of hits and struck out three batters over two frames. The 38-year-old veteran righty has been out since mid-July due to right shoulder inflammation, but doesn’t appear to be far off from rejoining the Padres’ bullpen. He’s made four minor league rehab appearances since August 30.

  • Padres transferred RHP Craig Stammen to the 60-day injured list.
Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 38-year-old hurler -- who is working his way back from right shoulder inflammation -- it seems as though this move was made to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster. Stammen is still a couple of weeks away from starting a minor league rehab assignment.
