Musgrave

The 27-year-old southpaw has been disastrous in his time at Triple-A, posting a 9.98 ERA and 2.54 WHIP across 15 1/3 innings. He’ll need to get himself right in the minor leagues before earning another opportunity with the big league club.

Musgrave is recovered from the left elbow strain he suffered back in early May, but the Rockies will hold off on adding him back to their major league roster. The lefty owns a 4.45 ERA in 54 2/3 career MLB innings.

Musgrave has been out since early May with a left elbow strain and it’s unclear when he might be ready to rejoin the Rockies. This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Peter Lambert, who is making his major league debut in a start Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The 27-year-old southpaw has appeared in 10 games out of the Rockies’ bullpen this season, registering a 3.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 12/7 K/BB ratio across 10 innings of work. DJ Johnson has been recalled from Triple-A to take his place in the bullpen.

The Rockies were forced to improvise a bit in this one as the scheduled starter -- Chad Bettis -- was scratched prior to the game. The left-hander is having a nice spring, registering a 3.09 ERA and 13/2 K/BB ratio across 11 2/3 innings.

The left-hander punched out two and didn’t walk a batter on the night. The 24-year-old southpaw has pitched very well in Cactus League play, but doesn’t seem to be considered as an option for the Opening Day rotation.

Musgrave was lit up in his Friday appearance against the Mariners, allowing three runs over three innings of work, and this revelation lends some context to those struggles. Through 20 appearances overall, the 26-year-old has a 4.76 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. It’s not clear how long he might be out at this point.

Musgrave, 26, posted a 3.38 ERA and 10/2 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings across his first three starts for Albuquerque. He’ll provide length in the bullpen. Musgrave was not ranked by MLB.com among the Rockies’ top 30 prospects.

Musgrave has been consistent at both the major and minor league level this year, owning an ERA above 5.00 at each. He’ll likely eat up innings or perhaps be deployed in LOOGY situations for the Rox.

Musgrave holds a 5.08 ERA across 24 relief appearances this season. He’ll be back in September.
