Rule 5 pick Jason Grilli has cleared waivers, and the White Sox are trying to work out a trade with the Marlins to allow them to keep him.
Grilli will be returned to Florida if a deal doesn’t get done. His elimination from the compeition for jobs, leaves Mike Jackson, Jon Adkins and Neal Cotts battling for one or two spots. The White Sox haven’t made a decision whether to carry 11 or 12 pitchers.

Jason Grilli probably secured his spot in the White Sox bullpen by pitching three hitless innings in a minor league game yesterday.
Grilli gave up nine runs in his previous appearance, but with the exception of that outing, the Rule 5 pick has had a fine spring.

Jason Grilli, who had been rehabbing at Single-A Jupiter, has been added to Triple-A Albuquerque’s roster.
Grilli had a 2.53 ERA in seven starts after returning from Tommy John surgery. If he pitches well in Triple-A, he might join the Marlins as a middle reliever at some point.

Pirates placed Joel Hanrahan on the bereavement list.
Hanrahan will be excused for a minimum of three days to attend his grandmother’s funeral and spend time with his family. Save chances this weekend could go to Jason Grilli, Juan Cruz, Tony Watson or Chris Resop, with Grilli the leader in the clubhouse.

Jason Grilli allowed four runs in eight innings against the Tigers tonight to take the loss in his first career complete game.
Grilli is 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA. The White Sox seem to appreciate the fact that he hasn’t gotten bombed in any of his starts. We remain unimpressed, however.

Joel Hanrahan will be placed on the bereavement list Friday due to the death of his grandmother.
Hanrahan will be excused for a minimum of three days to attend the funeral and spend time with his family. The 30-year-old right-hander has posted a pedestrian 4.66 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this year and blew his first save on Tuesday night, but he’s in no danger of losing his job. Save chances this weekend could go to Jason Grilli, Juan Cruz, Tony Watson or Chris Resop.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle has named Jason Grilli as the top set-up option in his bullpen.
Most had assumed that Evan Meek would reprise his role from last year setting up Joel Hanrahan, but journeyman Jason Grilli who will be the first option in the eighth inning. Grilli should have value in leagues which utilize holds and could even be picked up as a handcuff for Hanrahan owners in NL-only formats.

Jason Grilli gave up six runs -- five earned -- in five innings tonight against the Indians.
Grilli did rebound after a five-run first, saving the White Sox pen. Still, he doesn’t belong in the team’s rotation.

Jason Grilli pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs and eight hits to win in Texas today.
Grilli has a 6.48 ERA in three starts, but it looks like the White Sox plan to keep him in the rotation and send Felix Diaz to the pen after Freddy Garcia returns. We don’t get it.

Pirates and RHP Jason Grilli avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.
Grilli was a nice story this past season, compiling a 2.48 ERA and 37/15 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings after joining the Pirates’ bullpen in July. The 35-year-old right-hander will help set up for closer Joel Hanrahan in 2012.
