Wasdin

James Baldwin was taken out of the mix when he pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief tonight.

He likely earned himself at least one more start. Wasdin isn’t an option in AL-only leagues.

That means it’s probably either John Wasdin or James Baldwin.

That of course could change if the Rangers need Wasdin out of the pen against the Red Sox in relief of Kenny Rogers on Wednesday.

Wasdin had a 5.10 ERA in five starts and four relief appearances for the Rangers. He’ll probably clear waivers and accept an assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma.

Wasdin was designated for assignment earlier this week. He’ll likely have to settle for a minor league deal elsewhere.

With J.T. Snow, Alex Cora, Doug Mirabelli and Willie Harris all starting, Wasdin was only facing half a major league lineup on Sunday, and the Red Sox didn’t stop there in helping him out. After Coco Crisp delivered a hard single on the very first pitch he saw from Wasdin, he was caught stealing before David Ortiz could even get to the plate. Wasdin figures to return to a middle relief role now. He could be a candidate to be demoted when Frank Francisco comes off the DL.

Wasdin will start tomorrow and should take over as Toronto’s fourth starter. Despite his problems with the home run, he’s a sleeper. He was striking out nearly five batters for every one he walked in Triple-A, and if he comes close to that in the majors, he should have some success.

Wasdin had made two appearances in his two weeks with the Rangers, giving up three runs in eight innings. Fabio Castro is replacing him on the roster.

It’s not a switch that will have any impact in fantasy leagues. Wasdin could be a candidate to make some starts for the Rangers later on, but it’s doubtful that he’ll ever be worth using.
