Jorge Oña hit a solo home run, the first of his MLB career, in Thursday’s win over the Giants.
Oña was still looking for his first major league hit when he stepped to the dish against Giants lefty Drew Smyly in the fourth inning. He found it, and quickly, when he smashed a Smyly breaker into the second deck in the bleachers in left field for a solo shot. The 23-year-old has gotten a bit of run at designated hitter since being promoted, starting there twice in four days, but the Padres just have so many moving parts that it’s hard to believe Oña can be relied upon for any meaningfully consistent playing time down the stretch. That said, he still carries NL-only intrigue, especially after Thursday’s jack.
