Giants selected LHP Jose Capellan from the Red Sox with the fourth pick in the Rule 5 draft.
Capellan, 21, spent last season in short-season ball, finishing with a 3.69 ERA and a 71/11 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings over 14 starts. He’s an intriguing prospect, but he’s a very long way from being major league-ready, and even in a rebuilding year, it seems like a long shot that the Giants will cary him.

Reds returned Rule-5 pick Jose Capellan to the Red Sox.
The Reds claimed Capellan off waivers from the Giants, who originally selected him in the Rule 5 draft. He never seemed like a realistic candidate to crack either roster, and the Red Sox will have him start the year back in A-ball.

Reds claimed LHP Jose Capellan off waivers from the Giants.
The Giants were going to send the Rule 5 pick back to Boston, but the Reds, who had already returned their Rule-5er to Atlanta, opted to step in and take a look at the left-hander. Capellan spent last season in short-season ball, finishing with a 3.69 ERA and a 71/11 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings. He has a chance to be a decent reliever someday, but he’s a long ways off. The Red Sox still figure to get him back.

Red Sox released LHP Jose Capellan.
Capellan was once a highly thought of prospect, but he posted an ugly 6.34 ERA and 1.99 ERA last season in 93 2/3 innings (16 starts) at Single-A Salem. He’s only 23 years of age, so perhaps he’ll get another shot with a different organization, but we don’t see him ever having a major impact.
