    Kinney became a free agent after being outrighted off the White Sox 40-man roster in October. The 32-year-old right-hander enjoyed success with Triple-A Charlotte this past season, but had a lousy 6.62 ERA in 12 appearances at the major-league level. He has an outside chance of winning a roster spot during spring training.

    Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. The 33-year-old right-hander performed admirably in 2012, posting a 3.94 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 36/15 K/BB ratio over 32 innings of work. He’ll likely serve in a middle relief role in the Mariners bullpen.

    Kinney has yet to pitch for the Mariners this season due to a stress reaction on the left side of his rib cage. The 34-year-old made one rehab appearance with Triple-A Tacoma back on May 17, but then had to be shut down again. The Mariners are surely hoping that the additional rest will pay off.

    Kinney had a nice year at Charlotte but posted a 6.62 ERA over 12 games with the big club despite striking out over a batter per inning. He can elect minor league free agency if he so chooses.

    The move clears a spot on the Mariners’ 40-man roster for reliever Kameron Loe. Kinney was shut down in early March with a stress reaction in his left shoulder and rib cage. There is no timetable for his return to Seattle.
