Making room for Jorge Sosa. Kinney, 27, gave up seven runs in 12 2/3 innings in his month with the Cardinals. He’ll be back by September.

Kinney became a free agent after being outrighted off the White Sox 40-man roster in October. The 32-year-old right-hander enjoyed success with Triple-A Charlotte this past season, but had a lousy 6.62 ERA in 12 appearances at the major-league level. He has an outside chance of winning a roster spot during spring training.

Kinney earned the promotion after holding a 2.70 ERA and 38/11 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 frames at Tacoma. He’ll be used in the middle innings.

Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. The 33-year-old right-hander performed admirably in 2012, posting a 3.94 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 36/15 K/BB ratio over 32 innings of work. He’ll likely serve in a middle relief role in the Mariners bullpen.

Kinney has yet to pitch for the Mariners this season due to a stress reaction on the left side of his rib cage. The 34-year-old made one rehab appearance with Triple-A Tacoma back on May 17, but then had to be shut down again. The Mariners are surely hoping that the additional rest will pay off.

Kinney had a nice year at Charlotte but posted a 6.62 ERA over 12 games with the big club despite striking out over a batter per inning. He can elect minor league free agency if he so chooses.

Kinney has been on the shelf all season because of a stress reaction in his left shoulder and rib cage. He’s likely to spend around two weeks in the minor leagues.

The Mariners are shutting him down in order to prevent the injury from turning into a fracture. Kinney be re-evaluated in a few weeks before the Mariners determine the next step. Obviously the right-hander will not be ready in time for Opening Day.

The move clears a spot on the Mariners’ 40-man roster for reliever Kameron Loe. Kinney was shut down in early March with a stress reaction in his left shoulder and rib cage. There is no timetable for his return to Seattle.
