Yankees designated OF Justin Maxwell for assignment.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Maxwell was limited to just 48 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season due to a torn labrum in his right shoulder, batting .260/.358/.588 with 16 homers, 35 RBI, 11 stolen bases and a .945 OPS. He’s a free swinger, but somebody might take a chance on him.
  • BOS Outfield
Justin Maxwell hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in his Astros’ debut Monday against the Braves.
Maxwell was just claimed off waivers from the Yankees over the weekend. It’s a good situation for the 28-year-old, who has an intriguing mix of power and speed. Though he’ll likely only play against left-handers initially, he’s worth monitoring in NL-only leagues.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
Jordan Schafer is not in Friday’s lineup against the Dodgers.
We haven’t heard anything about an injury, so he’s likely just getting the night off. The righty-hitting Justin Maxwell will make the start in center field and bat leadoff against southpaw Ted Lilly.
  • BOS Outfield
Astros claimed OF Justin Maxwell off waivers from the Yankees.
It’s a good spot for Maxwell, as he’ll report directly to the major league club and could find a decent amount of playing time in the outfield. Maxwell’s plate discipline has always held him back, but he has some pop and speed and might prove to be rosterable in NL-only leagues.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
Jordan Schafer is not in the Astros’ lineup Tuesday against the Mets due to a left oblique strain.
Justin Maxwell is starting in center field on Tuesday night. It’s not clear how long Schafer will be out, though most oblique strains require a couple of weeks to heal. He’s batting .276/.351/.356 with two homers, eight RBI and eight steals this year.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
Jordan Schafer left Wednesday’s game against the Mets after four innings with an apparent oblique injury.
Schafer was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup with a left oblique strain and he appears to have aggravated the issue on a swinging-strikeout. He went 0-for-1 with two walks and a stolen base before being replaced by Justin Maxwell in center field. Stay tuned for an update.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
Jordan Schafer is out Tuesday due to an illness.
Schafer was involved in a collision at second base Sunday and reported feeling some dizziness, but this Tuesday night absence is not thought to be related. Justin Maxwell is playing center field against the Nationals.
  • SF Relief Pitcher
Jordan Schafer is not in the Astros’ starting lineup Tuesday against the Phillies.
He’s getting the day off with left-hander Cliff Lee on the bump for the Phillies. Justin Maxwell will get the start in center field Tuesday and bat second.
  • BOS Outfield
Justin Maxwell went 2-for-4 with one of four Astros’ home runs in Sunday’s 11-9 win over the White Sox.
He tagged Phil Humber for a two-run bomb in the fifth, and we do mean bomb. The blast was Maxwell’s third in his past seven games, and sixth of the season. He’s worth a flier in deeper mixed leagues.
  • BOS Outfield
Astros placed OF Justin Maxwell on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle injury.
He’ll have arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from the ankle, which will sideline him for 4-6 weeks. Maxwell is batting just .231 this year for the Astros, but they’ll miss his pop, as he’s gone deep eight times while driving in 24 runs.
