Butler was in a competition for a bullpen spot, and while he didn’t necessarily leave no doubts -- the right-hander had an 8.38 ERA in 9 2/3 innings -- he’s won the job. The 25-year-old will serve in a middle relief role for the club.

Cardinals sent RHP Keith Butler outright to Triple-A Memphis.
The 25-year-old had Tommy John surgery this past summer, so he’ll be out of commission until the middle of the 2015 season anyway. The Cards made the move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
