Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports that Kim Ng has declined to interview for the head of baseball operations job with the Red Sox.
Ng was immediately speculated as a potential candidate for Boston after he opted against returning to the Marlins this week. According to multiple reports, the Marlins planned to hire a president of baseball operations over her. It’s not clear what Ng’s next move might be, but it won’t be with the Red Sox, who have run into a number of rejections from prospective candidates during their interview process. Former Giants manager Gabe Kapler is newest known candidate for the role as the Red Sox look to replace Chaim Bloom, though Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that former Twins GM Thad Levine and Cubs assistant GM Craig Breslow appear to have momentum for the job.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan says Kim Ng exited Miami because of the team’s desire to hire a president of baseball operations over her.
As CEO, Derek Jeter, of course, outranked Ng when Ng was hired as Marlins’ GM, but since he exited in Feb. 2022, Ng was the clear baseball operations leader in Miami. It’s easy to understand her leaving if the club wanted to bump her back down to second in terms of decision making.

Marlins GM Kim Ng declined her half of a mutual option and will not return to the team for 2024.
The Marlins’ release states that they exercised their part of the option. Perhaps Ng wanted more than the one-year commitment to carry on. After losing more than 90 games in each of Ng’s first two seasons, the Marlins made the playoffs this year, finishing 84-78 despite a negative run differential. Apart from the 31-29 campaign in 2020, it was the Marlins’ first season over .500 since 2009.

Marlins hired Oz Ocampo as assistant general manager.
Ocampo is widely respected throughout baseball, and has been a big part of building several organizations through the international ranks. This comes right as the Marlins are opening a new international academy in the Dominican Republic, as pointed out by Jon Morosi of MLB Network and NBC Sports. Ocampo has also worked for the Pirates, Cardinals and Major League Baseball.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Marlins have interviewed Oz Ocampo for their assistant general manager vacancy.
Ocampo has spent time with the Cardinals, Pirates, MLB, and Astros. Ocampo was the team’s international crosschecker in his second and most recent stint with Houston. The Marlins have been busy revamping not only their front office but have interviewed many candidates for the manager role after parting ways with Don Mattingly at the end of the season.

The Miami Marlins have named Kim Ng their new general manager.
It’s a historic move, as Ng becomes the first female GM in baseball history and the first ever female GM of a North American men’s pro sports team. Kim, 51, was most recently the senior vice president for baseball operations with Major League Baseball and has previously worked for the White Sox, Yankees and Dodgers. She has interviewed for multiple GM posts over the years and will now finally get her shot.
