Septimo

The perennial minor leaguer has looked pretty bad this spring, particularly over his last five appearances (13 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings). His overall ERA is 15.95 through 7 1/3 frames. It is safe to say that the Leyson Septimo experiment is over.

Septimo, 26, became a free agent after being outrighted off Chicago’s 40-man roster last month. The hard-throwing left-hander posted an underwhelming 5.30 ERA and 60/41 K/BB ratio over 56 innings at the Double-A level this season between the White Sox and Diamondbacks organizations.

Septimo will fill the lefty specialist role left vacant by Will Ohman’s departure. The 26-year-old Dominican was sporting a 1.48 ERA in 30 1/3 innings at Triple-A.

Septimo missed just over the minimum on the DL with a left biceps injury. He’ll provide left-handed bullpen depth behind Phil Coke and Darin Downs.

It’s not clear at this point how long he’ll be sidelined. Septimo has been dominant at Triple-A this year but hasn’t been able to find the same success in his short time with the Sox. He’s replaced in the pen by Hector Santiago.

Septimo has been sidelined since the second week of spring training with a strained left shoulder. If all goes well, he could join the White Sox in mid-June.

Septimo is fully recovered from his left shoulder strain, but the White Sox don’t have a spot for him right now in their bullpen. He will get a look eventually.

A former outfielder, Septimo put up less than impressive numbers at the Double-A level this season in the White Sox and Diamondbacks organizations. The 26-year-old doesn’t look ready to contribute at the big league level.

Septimo hasn’t pitched since March 7 due to the injury. The 27-year-old left-hander is out of options this spring, so the injury conveniently delays a potential tough roster decision.

Septimo left Thursday’s Cactus League game with an apparent arm injury, but the White Sox haven’t elaborated on his condition. However, that he’s slated to throw again on Monday means that it’s probably not a major concern.
