Mark Wagner homered and walked twice Wednesday for Scottsdale of the AFL.
Wagner went from a 939 OPS at Single-A Lancaster in 2007 to a 666 OPS in Double-A last season, but he’s bounced back to hit .319/.407/.553 in 47 at-bats this fall. A solid defensive catcher, he should make it as a major league backup if he proves he can contribute some with the bat. His OBPs won’t impress, but he does have a fair amount of power.

Mark Wagner went 2-for-2 with a tiebreaking homer in the top of the ninth to power the Red Sox to a 5-4 win over the Orioles on Sunday.
It might not happen with Boston, but the 25-year-old Wagner is a potential major league backup catcher. He hit .301/.410/.477 in 153 at-bats in Double-A before stumbling in his intro to Triple-A last year (.214/.268/.351). Since he’s a fine defender, he won’t have to be all that strong offensively in order to carve out a career.

Mark Wagner has cleared waivers and been assigned to extended spring training.
Wagner was designated for assignment by the Red Sox at the end of March. The 26-year-old California native is a .264/.349/.420 career hitter in the minor leagues.

Red Sox designated C Mark Wagner for assignment.
He was cleared to make room for the newly-acquired Mike McKenry on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old has a .264/.349/.420 batting line over parts of six seasons in the minors and carries the reputation as a solid defender behind the plate. He could draw some interest.
