Woodyard had a 3.52 ERA in nine starts and 34 relief appearances for Double-A Erie last season. Interestingly, he has 16 Ks in 14 1/3 IP in the AFL after fanning just 55 batters in 102 1/3 IP in the minors. The Tigers see him as someone who could turn into a useful reliever.

Woodyard, who was added to Detroit’s 40-man roster after last season, had a 3.84 ERA in 45 relief appearances for Toledo. The 26-year-old will be a middle reliever at best.

Woodyard could have picked up his first major league win if Orlando Cabrera had just hit a grounder a little harder. The Tigers couldn’t quite turn an inning-ending double play on Cabrera’s grounder to short in the eighth and the Angels went on to score three runs in the inning.
