    Phillies released OF Matt Kroon.
Kroon had been in the Phillies organization since being drafted in the 18th round in 2018. He had a big 2023, mostly in Double-A, to get himself some attention, but he was already 26 at that point and his production has slipped in Triple-A since.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #73
Phillies optioned RHP Mick Abel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley; reassigned C Paul McIntosh, INF Otto Kemp, OF Matt Kroon and OF Gabriel Rincones Jr. to minor league camp.
Abel, who just made his spring debut in giving up three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings versus Boston today, was one of the premier pitching prospects in baseball just two years ago, but wound up stalling out in the upper minors, and has yet to reach the big leagues. The 23-year-old was added to Philadelphia’s 40-man roster during the offseason and figures to reach the majors at some point this season if injuries strike the rotation.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #57
Phillies optioned RHP Nick Nelson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and reassigned RHP Nick Snyder, OF Carlos De La Cruz, OF Matt Kroon, OF Simón Muzziotti, INF Nick Podkul, and C William Simoneit to minor league camp.
None of these moves comes as much of a surprise. Nelson was solid as a starter and reliever for the organization last year, and he figures to serve as valuable pitching depth over the course of the season.
  • PHI 3rd Baseman
Phillies 3B prospect Matt Kroon went 4-for-4 with four singles in Arizona Fall League action on Wednesday.
The four-hit day pushed his average up to .300 and his OBP over .400 for the fall league. The 26-year-old played 94 games across Double-A and Triple-A in 2023, slashing .326/.399/.526 with 11 home runs, 31 doubles, five triples, and 26 stolen bases. He had a strikeout rate under 20 percent and could provide intriguing deep league fantasy value if he were to find a job somewhere.
