Palmer

Palmer, a non-roster invitee, has allowed one run over two innings of work this spring. The 32-year-old right-hander owns a 4.52 ERA in the big leagues and is likely to open the season in the minors.

Palmer, 32, posted an uninspiring 5.74 ERA in 15 2/3 major league innings this past year for the Angels and didn’t fare much better at Triple-A Salt Lake. He’ll serve as organizational relief depth for the Pads in 2012.

Palmer was designated for assignment last week after allowing two runs in two innings with the big-league Friars. He’ll continue acting as organizational relief depth.

The Padres needed someone to eat up innings out of the pen if need be, and Palmer can at least do that even though he’s an unexciting talent. He posted a 4.64 ERA over seven starts with Tucson.

The bigger news is that this is essentially confirmation that Huston Street will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday. Palmer, 33, allowed a pair of runs over two innings in three appearances with the Friars since he was promoted on May 20. He simply isn’t a big league caliber pitcher. He’ll clear waivers and return to Triple-A Tucson.

Palmer, 33, appeared in three games for the Padres this season and posted an ugly 5.66 ERA at Triple-A. He’ll look to latch on elsewhere.

Palmer was a longshot to win a bullpen spot as a non-roster invitee, and the slim chance he had is obviously out the window now. The Dodgers didn’t reveal a timetable for his return, but he shouldn’t miss much of the start of the minor league season.

A non-roster invitee, Palmer has already been reassigned and will rehab in minor league camp. He’ll eventually settle in at Triple-A Albuquerque when healthy.

He isn’t necessarily the worst pitcher in the Angels’ bullpen right now -- and that’s not saying much -- but unfortunately for him, he had options at his disposal. Palmer has an ugly 6.26 ERA and 2.04 WHIP over 23 innings this season.
