Orioles RHP prospect Matthew Grimes spanned eight shutout innings Sunday in a win for High-A Frederick.
The eight-inning gem was the longest start of his career. Grimes hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts and now leads the Carolina League with seven wins this year. He also owns the league’s second-lowest ERA (1.21) and fifth-lowest WHIP (1.06). The 24-year-old has allowed just one earned run during his four-game winning streak. Despite his success, Grimes has only struck out 37 hitters in 59 2/3 innings this year.

Orioles RHP prospect Matthew Grimes scattered five hits over seven scoreless frames Tuesday in a win for High-A Frederick.
The 24-year-old is 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA over his last three starts. He owns the Carolina League’s second-lowest ERA at 1.39 and is tied for the league lead with six wins. As encouraging as those numbers sound, they don’t tell the whole story. Opponents have hit .255 against Grimes and his strikeout rate isn’t what you’d expect from a top of the rotation arm (5.57 K/9). With a fastball that tops out in the low 90s, Grimes will really need to locate his pitches if he wants to make it to the next level.
