He gave up six hits, walked three, and struck out one. Thompson is up with Chan Ho Park on the DL and should get a couple of more starts. However, he isn’t a very good play in NL-only leagues.

Mike Thompson will start in place of Chan Ho Park against the Rockies on Sunday.

Thompson turned in two more solid starts while Chan Ho Park was out. He’ll again be used next time an extra starter is needed.

Thompson left with a one-run lead, but Scott Linebrink gave up a game-tying homer in the eighth. Thompson is 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA in six starts since taking Woody Williams’ spot in the rotation. He’ll face the Rangers in Texas on Tuesday, so even though he’s not a bad use of a roster spot in NL-only leagues, he probably should be reserved next week.

Thompson is taking Jake Peavy’s slot in the rotation so that Peavy can have extra rest between starts. Thompson will be pitching on normal rest.

The lone run Thompson gave up came on a solo blast by opposing starter Jorge Sosa. Thompson gave up just four hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out two, so he needed only 78 pitches to complete the seven innings. We don’t think Thompson is going to have long-term value in NL-only formats, but he’s yet to walk a batter in two outings and has allowed just four earned runs in 12 innings as a result. He’s worth using against the Rockies at Petco Park next week.

Thompson started for the Padres last Friday and allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He isn’t much of a fantasy option even in the deepest NL-only leagues.

Thompson is starting Saturday in place of Clay Hensley, who was a late scratch with pain in his buttocks. He might be sent back to Triple-A after the game.

The Padres have Thursday off, so they won’t need Thompson as a starter right away. He’ll be available in middle relief for now, and he’ll probably get a start either this weekend or next week.
