Andrew Bailey suffers minor setback in bullpen session

Two steps forward, one step back. So it goes.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Red Sox right-hander Andrew Bailey suffered a minor setback earlier this weekend after tossing a bit-too-intense bullpen session. But the good news is it has nothing to do with his surgically-repaired thumb.

“His arm didn’t feel great throwing,’’ said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. “We were accelerating his progress a little and we decided to slow him down.’’

Bailey will be idle for about a week to allow the soreness to dissipate from his throwing arm. If he’s able to get right back at it following that short period of rest, the 28-year-old should still be able to make his debut in the Boston bullpen before the start of August.
