Brett Lawrie is playing second base on rehab assignment

Jose Reyes’ ankle injury has the Blue Jays considering their infield options, including giving third baseman Brett Lawrie some time at second base during his minor league rehab assignment for a rib cage injury.

“We just wanted to take a look at it,” general manager Alex Anthopoulos told Robert Falkoff of MLB.com. “We feel we’re deeper in the outfield. It’s not something we’re ready to commit to and, if we don’t feel good about it, we won’t go forward with it.”

If the Blue Jays think Lawrie can hack it at second base they could then use Jose Bautista at third base, where he’s started 345 games in the majors. Lawrie, on the other hand, hasn’t started anywhere but third base in the majors and hasn’t played second base since he was at Double-A in 2010.
