The Cubs have acquired utilityman Chris Coghlan from the Athletics in exchange for fellow utilityman Arismendy Alcantara, MLB.com’s Jane Lee reports. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the Cubs traded Coghlan to the A’s back in February for pitcher Aaron Brooks.
Coghlan, 30, has struggled this season, batting a meager .146/.215/.272 with five home runs and 14 RBI in 172 plate appearances. He was great for the Cubs last year, however, spending most of his time facing right-handed pitching against which he posted an .831 OPS.
Alcantara, 24, has spent the season with Triple-A Iowa. He hit .264/.315/.437 with five homers and 21 RBI in 213 PA. He might have a chance at some regular MLB playing time later this season as the Athletics are expected to make some more trades. Jed Lowrie or Danny Valencia, for example, could be moved.
