David Ortiz reclaims his disputed RBI
Call it “the RBI that won’t die.”
Even after all of the lengths Red Sox GM Theo Epstein and owner John Henry went through to take it away from him, David Ortiz today was reawarded an RBI from last Wednesday’s game against the Indians.
To review, Ortiz was initially credited with a two-run single on a ball to right that was bobbled by Cleveland’s Austin Kearns. The official scorer reviewed it afterwards and changed it to a one-run single, apparently because it appeared third-base coach Tim Bogar started to hold Kevin Youkilis on the play before the bobble. MLB reviewed it, as it occasionally does disputed plays, and changed it back today.
The decision gives Ortiz 75 RBI this season. It also restores an earned run to Carlos Carrasco’s total, taking his ERA from 4.55 to 4.62.
