The Diamondbacks’ long search for a general manager is finally over. On Saturday, the club filled the post with former Red Sox’ senior vice president and general manager Mike Hazen. According to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert, Hazen was selected from a pool of approximately seven other candidates.

Hazen’s resume is as varied as it is impressive, with three years of oversight in the Indians’ scouting department and 11 seasons within the Red Sox’ front office, during which he performed as the director of player development, senior vice president, and assistant GM from 2006 through 2016. Hazen’s first full season as general manager came in 2016 following Ben Cherington’s departure and Dave Dombrowski’s promotion to president of baseball operations in September 2015. Hazen saw the club through a 93-69 finish and their first postseason run since 2013.

Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall had this to say about Hazen’s hiring:

Mike’s background is the perfect balance of scouting, player development and analytics, which will all play an important role going forward. He’s a natural leader, who we feel fortunate to have been able to hire, and we welcome him and his family to Arizona.
