Diamondbacks’ No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson suffers concussion, gets 14 stitches after beaning

No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson hasn’t even played his first minor-league game for the Diamondbacks yet, but the former Vanderbilt shortstop is already injured.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that Swanson was hit in the face with a fastball while hitting against a fellow Diamondbacks prospect in batting practice and “suffered a mild concussion and required 14 stitches on the right side of his mouth.”

Swanson was scheduled to join a minor-league team later this week after signing for $6.5 million just before the July 17 deadline, but now those plans are on hold. Diamondbacks officials seem optimistic that he won’t be sidelined long, although concussions are impossible to predict.
