Gerrit Cole was scratched from a scheduled rehab outing last Friday night at Triple-A Indianapolis, with Pirates general manager Neal Huntington claiming that the right-hander needed to “refine some things.”
The extra work on the side didn’t do much good.
As noted by Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Cole got shelled for five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk in his return to action Tuesday night at Indy. He was pulled after just 4 1/3 innings.
Cole obviously isn’t going to return to the Pirates’ rotation this weekend, as had been the hope.
He has been on the disabled list since July 5 because of a strained right lat muscle.
