Mark Teixeira spoke to the media yesterday for the first time since the Yankees announced that he’ll miss 8-10 weeks with a strained wrist tendon and revealed a little bit of a silver lining: He won’t require surgery.

That won’t enable him to return before mid-May at the earliest, but obviously avoiding going under the knife is always a good thing. According to Teixeira, doctors told him that it’s not an injury he could play through because he’d be at risk of further damaging the tendon to the point that surgery would then be necessary.

“That’s why we have the conservative timetable of 8-10 weeks, because we really don’t know exactly how long it’s going to take, but it has to heal fully,” Teixeira said, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
