According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets have signed infielder Omar Quintanilla to a minor league contract. The deal includes an invite to spring training.

Quintanilla appeared in 29 games with the Mets last season prior to being traded to the Orioles for cash considerations in July. The 31-year-old became a free agent after he was non-tendered by Baltimore following the season.

Quintanilla is a .220/.279/.302 hitter in the majors, so he offers very little in the way of upside on offense, but he’s capable of playing both shortstop and second base. He could contend for a backup middle infielder job during spring training, but Brandon Hicks likely has the edge since he’s already on the 40-man roster.
