In what might be the end of the line for John Maine, the Red Sox released the oft-injured right-hander after signing him to a minor-league contract in January.
Maine never actually appeared in a minor-league game for the Red Sox, as more shoulder problems derailed his comeback attempt. He also had a 7.43 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A for the Rockies’ affiliate last season.
When healthy Maine was a solid mid-rotation starter, throwing 502 innings with a 4.01 ERA for the Mets from 2006-2009, but he’s topped 140 innings in a big-league season just once and might be finished at age 32.
