The Yankees could have a familiar face back in uniform soon, as CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the club interviewed Willie Randolph for a coaching position at some point.
It’s unclear which position Randolph interviewed for, but the Yankees have yet to name a new hitting coach or a first base coach. It’s worth noting that the former first base coach, Mick Kelleher, was also the infield instructor. Randolph could be a good fit for that, especially with a number of younger players likely to play up the middle this year.
Randolph played with the Yankees from 1976-1988 and was a coach with the club for 11 seasons after his retirement. He left the organization in November of 2004 when he was hired to manage the Mets. Since being fired in 2008, he has worked as a bench coach with the Brewers (2009-2010) and a bench coach/third base coach with the Orioles (2011).
