The Detroit Tigers signed the number one overall pick in the truncated 2020 draft yesterday, inking Arizona state’s Spencer Torkelson with a deal with a bonus of $8,416,300.

That’s the largest bonus for a draft pick since Major League Baseball began using bonus pools and slots and things. It’s actually, $1,000 over slot, which I suppose made Scott Boras happy as he can say he got another pick “over slot.”

Torkelson, who as a first baseman at Arizona State but who the Tigers named as a third baseman when they drafted him, is reportedly going to be added to the club’s 60-man player pool. The move is likely being made so that he can spend the summer working out in a structured environment in the Tigers’ camp in Toledo. He is not likely to play in the big leagues this year.
