From Kenta Maeda’s breakthrough to 19-year-old Julio Urias’ major league debut, the evolution of the Dodgers’ rotation has been at times both perplexing and astonishing this season. Sunday’s slate features one of their more recent newcomers, 24-year-old Jose De Leon, as he tries for the series win against the Diamondbacks.

It will be the third start for De Leon, who has tallied 11 innings in the majors thus far and is on the lookout for his third win of the season. The right-hander struck out two batters in his last outing against the Yankees, walking two and giving up two home runs in the Dodgers’ 8-2 win.

Taking the hill for Arizona is left-hander Robbie Ray, who has allowed 13 runs, seven walks, and struck out 21 batters (including his 200th of the season) over three starts with the club this September. Like De Leon, Ray’s control problems have fed into a 3.42 BB/9 rate, but his 4.55 ERA masks the second-highest K/9 rate in the league, at 11.34 whiffs per nine innings. On the flip side, the lefty’s dominance in the strike zone has not always translated to run prevention, as he also holds the second-highest hard contact rate in the league, at 36.6%.

The Diamondbacks will kick off the series finale at 4:10 PM EDT at Chase Field.
