The Rockies have elected not to pay the $1.3 million buyout to Oscar Rivera’s Mexican League team, according to the left-hander’s agent.
They had until June 1 to make a decision. Rivera was injured early on, giving the Rockies less time to make an evaluation. Rivera apparently will go back to Mexico unless Yucatan wants to sell his rights to another team.

The Rockies have reportedly purchased LHP Oscar Rivera away from Yucatan of the Mexican League.
Rivera, who turns 25 in April, went 9-7 with a 3.73 ERA for Yucatan last season and was 7-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 2005. He’s currently 5-2 with a 2.32 ERA while playing in Mexico this winter. “He reminds you of (Tom) Glavine, Kirk (Rueter),” said Vinny Castilla, who recommended Rivera to the Rockies. “I think he can be a very successful starting pitcher in the big leagues.” Yucatan will get $1.3 million if Rivera is kept by the Rockies out of spring training. He could compete for the fifth spot in the team’s rotation.

Oscar Rivera, who will be in Rockies camp as a non-roster player, didn’t pitch for Mexico in the Caribbean World Series because of stiffness in his lat muscle.
It’s not believed to be serious. Rivera, a 24-year-old left-hander added in December, will be a long shot candidate for a spot in the Colorado rotation. The Rockies would have to pay his Mexican team $1.3 million if they decide to add him to the 40-man roster.

Rockies reassigned LHP Oscar Rivera, RHP Bobby Keppel, RHP Zach McClellan and C Edwin Bellorin to minor league camp.
The Rockies still have more time to decide whether it’d be worth paying the $1.3 million it’d take to retain Rivera’s rights. If they don’t, the 24-year-old would return to his team in Mexico. Rivera gave up seven runs in seven innings this spring, but he did strike out nine.

LHP Oscar Rivera will start for Double-A Tulsa on Saturday.
The Rockies have until June 1 to decide whether to pay $1.3 million to Yucatan or return him to the Mexican League. Rivera will make two starts for Tulsa and then make at least one for Triple-A Colorado Springs before the Rockies decide if they want to purchase his contract.

LHP Oscar Rivera threw two innings during a spring training game on Tuesday.
The Rockies have until May 30 to determine if they want to pay $1.3 million to purchase Rivera’s rights or return him to his team in Mexico.

Oscar Rivera yielded three runs in two innings of relief Saturday versus the Padres.
Despite a 9/2 K/BB ratio, Rivera has given up seven runs in seven innings. The Rockies probably won’t keep him on their major league roster at this rate, and they may not want to pay the $1.3 million it’d take to buy his rights from his Mexican League team so that they could send him to Triple-A.

Oscar Rivera, who was kept out of the Caribbean Series by Mexico because of a strained chest muscle, threw a pain-free bullpen session Saturday.
Rivera, a 24-year-old lefty, is in Rockies camp with the agreement that if the organization wants to keep him, it will pay $1.3 million to his Mexican League team for his rights. He’s something of a long shot to make the team out of spring training, but the Rockies could pay the fee and still send him to Triple-A.
