Padres signed Cuban left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez for a $2.5 million bonus.
Hernandez comes with a 100 percent luxury tax hit ($2.5 million) for the Padres, who had already soared past their international spending allotment. The 18-year-old left-hander drew interest from a range of major league clubs, including the Reds, Astros, Mets, Braves, Rangers, and Red Sox. He reportedly sits 92-94 mph with his fastball, with room for improvement.
