Lopes latched on with the Rockies last year on a minor league contract and hit .271/.333/.451 with none homers and 10 steals in 299 plate appearances over 70 games for Triple-A Albuquerque. The versatile 28-year-old infielder last appeared in the majors during the 2021 season when he got into seven games for the Brewers. He’ll function as organizational infield depth for the Padres this season.

Lopes was jettisoned from the Brewers’ 40-man roster earlier this offseason after appearing in just seven games at the major-league level during the 2021 campaign. The 27-year-old holds a pedestrian .246/.310/.352 triple-slash line with three homers and 11 stolen bases across 290 plate appearances in the big leagues since 2019. He projects as a versatile super utility option for the Rockies moving forward.

Lopes cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with the Brewers organization moving forward. The versatile 27-year-old appeared in just seven games at the major-league level this season.

Lopes was just called up Sunday with Willy Adames (quad) going on the IL, but he’ll head back down to Triple-A now that Kolten Wong is ready to return from the paternity list.
