Rodriguez struggled at High-A Bakersfield this year before getting sent back down to Dayton, where he batted .271/.307/.430 with six homers, 44 RBI and a .737 OPS the rest of the way. The 20-year-old hasn’t shown much plate discipline (298/67 K/BB ratio) as a pro and is still quite raw, but the Reds aren’t ready to give up on his tools.

Rodriguez has been out all season with a strained hamstring. It’s unclear when he might be ready to return.

Rodriguez was with the clubs for just a couple of days to provide an extra bat on the bench. He has appeared in 11 games with the big league club this season, slashing .222/.276/.222 with two RBI in 27 at-bats. He should get another opportunity with the big league club later in the summer.

Rodriguez was ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the Reds’ system by Baseball America over the winter. An early cut from spring training this season, he hit .272/.310/.432 with nine homers and 40 RBI across 287 at-bats in Triple-A prior to the promotion.

There are some notable names but no surprises among this group. Rodriguez, Stephenson and Lorenzen were all ranked by Baseball America among the team’s top-six prospects. It’s possible their Stephenson, their top prospect, will make his major league debut sometime this season.

Another early cut from Reds’ camp, Rodriguez made his major league debut last September after batting 262/.331/.389 with nine home runs, 40 RBI, and 12 stolen bases over 119 games in Double-A. Baseball America ranked him as the organization’s No. 10 prospect over the winter.

The longtime prospect is out of minor league options, so if he doesn’t crack the Opening Day roster, he would likely be claimed by another club. Rodriguez slashed .269/.308/.429 with 10 homers and 41 RBI in 85 games at Triple-A Louisville in 2015 before a calf injury ended his season prematurely.

Rodriguez injured the hamstring last week. He’ll be the fourth outfielder when he’s healthy.
