Mavericks sign Rashard Lewis to one-year, minimum-salary contract

Dallas Mavericks v Orlando Magic

Dallas Mavericks v Orlando Magic

In 2002, Rashard Lewis was debating between signing with the Seattle SuperSonics and Dallas Mavericks. Here’s what each team offered:

  • Seattle: six years, $65 million
  • Dallas: three years, $15 million

Lewis ultimately picked the Sonics, but that the Mavericks even competed with their lesser offer shows how highly he thought of them.

Now, a dozen years later, Lewis – who grew up in Texas – joins LeBron James as Heat players heading home.

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports:

Tim MacMahon of ESPN:

Lewis will likely back up Dirk Nowitzki. Like Nowitzki, Lewis is a stretch four, so he’ll allow the Mavericks to keep the same scheme no matter which player is in the game.

Don’t count on Lewis, who turns 35 next month, to play many minutes. But in a limited role, he still might be able to help a playoff team.
