Cleveland Cavaliers guard Mo Williams will bypass becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer to pick up his player option for the 2016-17 season, league sources informed cleveland.com.
Williams, 33, signed a modest two-year, $4.3 million deal last season and the second year contained a player option. The deadline for him to opt out is June 16, a league source told cleveland.com. He will earn approximately $2.2 million next season.
Williams, who the Cavs brought in because of his close relationship with LeBron James from his time on the Cavs during LeBron’s pre-Miami years, didn’t play much this season. Opting in is probably smart of him — even with the rising salaries around the league, he’s barely a rotation player anymore and might not be able to get more than the minimum on the open market. One more year of security on a team that will be a title contender is the best move for him.
