Any time you pass Larry Bird on any list, you’re doing something right.

Paul Pierce should already have cemented himself as one of the Boston Celtics’ all-time great players, but to echo that point Pierce passed Bird to move into second on the Celtics all-time scoring list with a jumper in the third quarter that gave him 21,792 points. (To answer your question, John Havlicek with 26,395 points.)

When the shot went in the Garden erupted in cheers and Pierce waved his arms to acknowledge and thank the crowd.

Pierce has had quite a career in Boston, having seen the bottom and a banner go to the rafters. He has survived a stabbing and become one of the modern icons of a legendary franchise.

This was his night. It’s well deserved. He should savor it.
