The NFL fined Bengals running back Chase Brown $5,481 for unsportsmanlike conduct for his touchdown celebration on Monday night.
Brown celebrated his 19-yard touchdown reception by jumping into one of the Salvation Army kettles behind the end zone at AT&T Stadium.
Officials did not penalize Brown.
The NFL has been inconsistent over the years in its decision whether to fine celebrations in the kettles. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t.
None of the Cowboys players who celebrated a touchdown in one of the kettles on Thanksgiving Day in 2023 were fined. That celebration included several players eating turkey legs that were stashed in the kettles.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott was not fined for a leap into the kettle in 2016, but he was fined $13,369 for the same thing in 2018. Elliott and Prescott each were docked $13,261 for unsportsmanlike conduct in 2022 for a “Zeke-in-the-box” celebration.
Four of the team’s tight ends did a Whac-a-Mole celebration in the kettle a week earlier in 2022 and were not penalized but were fined.
In 2017, former Seahawks cornerback Justin Coleman was penalized for jumping into one of the red kettles after a pick-six but was not fined.
NFL celebration rules prohibit players from using props, but the league should look the other way considering the positive publicity the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign receives for the celebrations.
The Cowboys ruled cornerback Trevon Diggs out for Sunday’s game against the Panthers and he’s reportedly going to miss the final three games of the 2024 season as well.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that Diggs is set to have surgery to repair a knee injury that he’s been dealing with for much of the season. He missed two games before returning against the Bengals, but will now have an extended rehab in front of him after the operation.
The Bengals game was the first time this season that the Cowboys had Diggs, Jourdan Lewis, and DaRon Bland in the lineup at the same time. They were expected to be the team’s top corners, but a chance to see them in extended action together will have to wait until next season.
Diggs appeared in 11 games this season. He had 42 tackles and two interceptions in those contests.
Cornerback Trevon Diggs won’t be in the Cowboys lineup in Carolina on Sunday.
The Cowboys announced on Saturday afternoon that Diggs has been downgraded to out and will not travel with the team. He was listed as questionable due to a knee injury on the final injury report of the week.
Sunday’s game will be the third one that Diggs has missed this season.
The Cowboys elevated cornerback Andrew Booth and offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley from the practice squad on a temporary basis. Both players will revert back after the game.
They also placed DeMarvion Overshown on injured reserve. Overshown suffered a severe knee injury in Week 14 and may miss the entire 2025 season as a result.
The Cowboys have some concerning injuries on defense. Again.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (knee) is out for the season and headed for injured reserve, and the team ruled out safety Juanyeh Thomas (knee).
Starting cornerbacks Trevon Diggs (knee) and Jourdan Lewis (hamstring) are questionable. Diggs returned Monday night after missing two games, and he did not practice Friday after limited practices Wednesday and Thursday.
Lewis was limited all week.
Starting linebacker Eric Kendricks (personal/shoulder) also is questionable after missing practice all week as is linebacker Nick Vigil (foot). Vigil also didn’t practice this week.
In addition, linebacker Buddy Johnson (illness) and cornerback C.J. Goodwin (hamstring) are questionable.
Starting center Cooper Beebe (concussion) will not play.
The Panthers only ruled one player out for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, but they have a number of questionable players.
One of those is cornerback Jaycee Horn. Horn was a limited participant in practice all week because of a groin injury and the team will wait until closer to kickoff to make a determination about his availability.
Linebacker Trevin Wallace was the only player ruled out. The rookie has been out all week with a shoulder injury.
Running back Raheem Blackshear (chest), linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (knee), linebacker Josey Jewell (hamstring), and safety Nick Scott (hamstring) are the other players listed as questionable for the game.
