Further tests on FB Derrick Wimbush’s broken hand revealed no major damage.
The team feared Wimbush would require more invasive surgery, but now the team expects him back for the start of training camp. He’s the team’s primary kick returner.

FB Derrick Wimbush will need surgery for a broken bone in his left arm.
A key contributor on specials and a backup fullback, Wimbush could miss training camp and the preseason while recovering from the injury. Wimbush led the Jaguars in special teams tackles in 2005 and set a team record for single-season kick return yardage.

Derrick Wimbush is reportedly ahead of Maurice Drew in the battle to be the team’s backup running back.
With Greg Jones out, the team may de-emphasize the fullback role, using Wimbush more as a tailback. While we wouldn’t draft Wimbush in his second season, it looks like he and LaBrandon Toefield are first in line for carries behind Fred Taylor.

The Patriots had several players in for tryouts Friday, including former Jaguars RB Derrick Wimbush and ex-Broncos P/K Paul Ernster.
Former Miami TE Jason Rader was also at the workout. Wimbush could be an option to help on special teams and at fullback if he signs with the Pats.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio says FB Derrick Wimbush and LaBrandon Toefield will compete to be the team’s short-yardage back this year.
Wimbush has good size for goal-line situations. Toefield had a good training camp. Don’t expect Fred Taylor to score touchdowns in bunches this season just because Greg Jones is out for the year.
