Patriots-Seahawks game preview

After a tumultuous offseason, New England will begin its second season under head coach Mike Vrabel, who helped improve the Patriots to 14-3 last season after going 4-13 in 2024. The improvement tied for the largest by an NFL team (also achieved by the 1998-99 Indianapolis Colts and the 2007-08 Miami Dolphins).

New England quarterback Drake Maye was second in MVP voting last year and made second-team All-Pro after leading the league in completion percentage (72%), yards per attempt (8.9) and passer rating (113.5). In the playoffs, Maye was sacked an NFL record 21 times (including six in the Super Bowl) as his completion percentage (58.3%) and yards per attempt (6.9) dropped.

The Patriots have shored up their wide receiving corps by acquiring A.J. Brown from Philadelphia and signing free agent Romeo Doubs. Brown, who has at least 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in each of the past four seasons, becomes a primary option in the absence of Stefon Diggs, who was released after becoming New England’s first 1,000-yard receiver since 2019.

New England is trying to maintain the NFL’s longest active road winning streak (nine games, including the playoffs).

The defending champs still cling to the top spot, barely.

The Seahawks are the first Super Bowl winner to return at least 20 starters since Tampa Bay in 2021. At 38 years and 227 days, head coach Mike Macdonald became the third-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl (Sean McVay and Mike Tomlin were both 36). Seattle will have a new offensive coordinator in Brian Fleury, who arrives after seven seasons in San Francisco as Klint Kubiak left to become the Oakland Raiders’ head coach.

The Seahawks are trying to become the first team to lead the league in scoring defense (17.2 points per game last year) since Seattle did it from 2002-15. They are one win shy of tying a franchise-record 11-game victory streak (set in 2005). Sam Darnold became the first quarterback in in NFL history to win 14 games in consecutive seasons with different teams (Minnesota in 2024, Seattle last year).

Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III signed with Kansas City, becoming the fourth Super Bowl MVP to join another team the next season. The Seahawks took running back Jadarian Price from Notre Dame with their first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba returns after winning Offensive Player of the Year with 1,793 receiving yards last season.

A new year means a new slate of eventually inaccurate guesses.
