2008 PFT HEROES COMING SOON

We complained loudly last month about the manner in which postseason awards are, um, awarded. Apart from the fact the Associated Press bases all its awards on only 50 writers and broadcasters, one of whom thinks that James Harrison is an inside linebacker, we don’t think that the determinations should be based on the regular season only. So when we launched our own line of postseason awards a year ago, we waited until after the entire season ended. We’ve named our prizes for a variety of former players who distinguished themselves with their play on their field, and their actions off it -- Alan Page, Derrick Thomas, Darrell Green, Pat Tillman, Mike Webster, Ozzie Newsome, Art Monk, Joe Delaney, and Boomer Esiason. This year, we’ll narrow the field to a handful of finalists at each position, and then we’ll get your input via the polling process. Though we can’t guarantee that we won’t exercise our option to veto the choice of PFT Planet, your voice will have considerable weight. We’ll announce on Thursday the finalists for the Alan Page Award, given to the best defensive lineman of the year. And we’ll allow 24 hours for votes to be cast and counted (which isn’t all that hard since they’re counted automatically). Meanwhile, if you want to make a case for any specific players to be named as finalists, send us your thoughts.
