There’s not much for the 49ers to do over the rest of this season other than look for players to stand out as possible contributors to better teams in the future, but they won’t be able to see how their 2015 first-round pick measures up on that front.

The team announced Tuesday that defensive lineman Arik Armstead has been placed on injured reserve. Armstead has played in all eight games this season, but has been hindered by the shoulder injury that led to Tuesday’s roster move.

Armstead started the last four games for the Niners and ends the year with 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He had 19 tackles and two sacks coming off the bench during his rookie season.

The 49ers added Armstead’s Oregon teammate DeForest Buckner to the defensive line in the first round this year, but they’ll have to wait until 2017 before they see the two of them on the field together again.

The 49ers claimed defensive tackle Chris Jones off of waivers from the Dolphins to fill Armstead’s roster spot. Jones had six tackles in seven games for the Dolphins and started 23 games for the Patriots in 2013 and 2014 before missing last season with a calf injury.
