Linebacker Anthony Spencer got the franchise tag from the Cowboys before the start of free agency and hasn’t signed it yet.
That’s not particularly notable since Spencer would like to get a long-term deal from the Cowboys. It’s also not all that notable that he wasn’t at the start of the team’s offseason workouts on Monday since most players in Spencer’s position opt out of the voluntary workouts while trying to secure the deal they want. That’s all part of the process that goes on every year.
What is notable is the fact that Spencer switched agents over the weekend. Todd Archer and Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com reports that Spencer has left Roosevelt Barnes and will sign with Jordan Woy. The report has no insight about the reasons behind the change, so this could either bode well or poorly for Spencer’s chances of agreeing to a contract with the Cowboys.
However it plays out on that front, it would seem to be a signal that there aren’t any imminent plans for Spencer to sign his tender, which would pay him $8.8 million this season.
