Jameis Winston already has one thing in common with Tony Romo. Sure, one guy was the first overall pick in the draft and the other was undrafted. And one guy has become a franchise quarterback and the other guy has a lot to prove before he earns that label.
But Winston and Romo will both be perfecting their craft in 2015 with virtual reality technology.
Via Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Buccaneers plan to join the Cowboys as the first NFL teams to utilize the device for simulated football training without the extra practice reps or risk of injury.
“I visualize the concept and go through my reads with no one out there,” Winston said. “I haven’t done any virtual things. I know the Cowboys have got it.”
The Buccaneers haven’t actually purchased a system yet. And they apparently are having trouble finding something that can be used right away, during the lull between the offseason program and training camp.
“What I tell vendors that come in to show us stuff is that we need it today,” offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. “Some people tell us, ‘This will be ready in three months. I say, ‘No, Jameis needs this tomorrow.’”
Tomorrow and the rest of the next six weeks would be a perfect time for Winston and all other NFL quarterbacks to work on their games through not just film study but an immersive experience that becomes the closest thing to actual on-field reps.
