Cardinals waive Jamaal Westerman to make room for Beanie Wells

The Cardinals are preparing for the return of running back Beanie Wells.

Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 in Phoenix reports that the team has waived linebacker Jamaal Westerman to create a roster spot for Wells to take when he’s activated from injured reserve. He was placed on injured reserve with the designation to return in late September, a move that required him to be out of practice for six weeks and absent from games for eight weeks. That time’s up and Wells will be back with the team this week.

That much we know. What we don’t know is how much of a boost Wells will give the offense. He ran for just 76 yards on 29 carries before sitting down with his toe injury and the Cardinals offensive line hasn’t been opening up much running room between the tackles. That’s where Wells does most of his work, while LaRod Stephens-Howling, who works outside the tackles for the most part, had a big week against the Falcons in Sunday’s 23-19 loss.

After Ken Whisenhunt figures out who will be his quarterback on Sunday, he can move on to determining how to split the workload at running back.
