Champ Bailey to play in record-tying 12th Pro Bowl

champbaileyprobowl

Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey will do something that only two players in NFL history have done before him: Play in a dozen Pro Bowls.

Sunday’s Pro Bowl will be the 12th of Bailey’s career, which ties him with Randall McDaniel and Will Shields for the most Pro Bowl appearances in NFL history. Bailey has been in the NFL for 14 seasons and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in all of them except two, his rookie year and his injury-plagued 2008 season. Unlike most stars, Bailey always plays in the Pro Bowl when he is chosen.

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez could have joined Bailey, McDaniel and Shields in the Dozen Pro Bowl Club, but he pulled out of Sunday’s game with an injury. Gonzalez has actually been selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times, but has twice pulled out.

The record for most Pro Bowl selections belongs to former Oilers/Titans offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, who played in 10 Pro Bowls and was selected to four others. Gonzalez, Reggie White and Jerry Rice are the three players in NFL history to earn 13 Pro Bowl selections.
