Mike McCoy might be flying into LAX next year, but he won’t be doing it as a lame duck.

According to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco announced that McCoy was getting a one-year contract extension.

Next year would have been the final year of McCoy’s deal, and he was on more tenuous footing than Telesco for several reasons.

Not the least of which was that Telesco got an extension prior to last season, one which secures him through 2019. It was never announced, with the stated reason being they didn’t want to create a distraction.

Now, as the Chargers try to recover from a 4-12 season in a location we don’t know yet, they’ll have one fewer distraction to deal with. Of course, a one-year extension for McCoy through 2017 just kicks the can down the road a year, but that’s applicable to so many things the Chargers have done lately.
