Giants tackle David Diehl said earlier this month that he’d be willing to restructure his deal to help the team sign other players.
The Giants have some money to use on that front, but not because Diehl restructured. It’s because Diehl has agreed to take a pay cut.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Diehl has agreed to slash $3.475 million from his 2013 salary. Diehl will now make $1 million next season and the Giants have salary cap room to use for extensions or additions however they see fit.
They also have the chance to return their entire starting offensive line from last season. They’ve re-signed left tackle William Beatty and left guard Kevin Boothe to go with center David Baas and right guard Chris Snee. Diehl was the right tackle last year, although he may face a challenge from James Brewer for the job once the Giants start their offseason activities.
Assuming Osi Umenyiora winds up leaving the Giants, Diehl will be the longest-tenured member of the team and the only Giant who has been on the team longer than quarterback Eli Manning.
